Though I left Maine years ago, I always keep tabs on the latest and greatest news from my home state. I'm not sure which category this falls into but if you love mashed potatoes, read on...
Aroostook County is Maine actually produces more potatoes than any other county in the United States. To celebrate that fact, they have resumed a summer event called the Maine Potato Blossom Festival.

To the delight or chagrin of locals, this event received sizeable coverage this year in the magazine of Maine, Down East. Though Fort Fairfield produces some of the most delicious potatoes in the country, the actual wrestling pit is filled with instant potatoes. Apparently, the overall consistency is easier to control -- and why waste a quality product?

Spectators and participants alike seem to enjoy the event -- once ever-hardening insta-spuds are removed from every crack and crevice. What better way for residents of Aroostook County to celebrate their $275 million dollar annual crop?
If you don't have enough potatoes to fill a ring, we recommend the follow recipes for them:
Sour Cream and Chive Mashed Potatoes -- Classic, creamy and delicious.
Dilled Mashed Potatoes -- The fresh dill really adds an amazing level of flavor.
Irio -- Want something different? Irio is comfort food in Kenya -- easy & filling.

This a very sad way to waste food, with all the hungry and homeless people in the world it would make more sense to donate this food, oppose to wrestling in it.
